ILS+ Class Information

Life & Job Skills Curriculum for Young Adults with Special Needs

Duration: 12 Weeks (begins September 8 through December 5, with Thanksgiving week off)
Schedule: 4 Hours/Day (10am-2pm), 5 Days/Week (Fridays are Field Trips)
Location: 548 W Bedford Euless Rd, Hurst, TX 76053 (Metro Driving School)

Cost: $4800 plus a $200 supplies fee

 

Weeks 1-2: Self-Awareness & Daily Living Skills

Goal: Develop self-care routines and independent living habits.
Topics:

  • Personal Hygiene & Grooming (brushing teeth, washing hands, dressing)

  • Healthy Living (nutrition, meal planning, hydration, simple exercise)

  • Household Skills (laundry, cleaning, organizing personal space)

  • Time Management (creating a daily schedule, using alarms & reminders)

  • Understanding Personal Strengths & Setting Goals

 

Weeks 3-4: Communication & Social Skills
Goal: Improve interpersonal skills for daily interactions and workplace readiness.
Topics:

  • Understanding Emotions & Self-Expression (using words, visuals, or technology)

  • Basic & Advanced Communication (introductions, conversations, asking for help)

  • Non-Verbal Communication (eye contact, gestures, personal space)

  • Social Etiquette & Manners (in public, at work, in group settings)

  • Conflict Resolution & Problem-Solving in Social Situations

 

Weeks 5-6: Community Engagement, Safety & Transportation
Goal: Increase independence and awareness of public resources.
Topics:

  • Identifying Community Resources (libraries, grocery stores, healthcare services)

  • Public Transportation Basics (reading schedules, etiquette, safety)

  • Street Safety & Stranger Awareness

  • Emergency Preparedness (fire safety, first aid, calling for help)

  • Community Involvement (volunteering, joining local activities)

 

Weeks 7-8: Money Management & Shopping Skills
Goal: Teach essential financial literacy and consumer skills.
Topics:

  • Identifying Coins & Bills, Digital Payments

  • Understanding the Value of Money (needs vs. wants)

  • Basic Budgeting & Saving Strategies

  • Smart Shopping (reading price tags, comparing prices, making lists)

  • Visiting Stores & Making Purchases Independently

 

Weeks 9-10: Job Readiness & Workplace Skills
Goal: Prepare students for employment opportunities.
Topics:

  • Exploring Careers & Workplace Expectations

  • Following Instructions & Completing Tasks

  • Resume Building & Job Applications (simplified)

  • Workplace Etiquette & Professional Behavior

  • Practice Job Interviews (Role-Playing)

 

Weeks 11-12: Independent Living, Cooking & Future Planning
Goal: Build self-sufficiency and plan for future independence.
Topics:

  • Basic Cooking & Meal Prep (using kitchen appliances safely)

  • Simple Recipes & Measuring Ingredients

  • Cleaning Up After Cooking & Table Etiquette

  • Housing Options & Responsibilities

  • Managing Personal Belongings & Organization Strategies

  • Setting Personal & Career Goals for the Future

  • Decision-Making & Self-Advocacy (rights & responsibilities)

  • Building Healthy Relationships & Recognizing Unhealthy Ones

  • Problem-Solving in Everyday Life

  • Graduation Ceremony & Reflection on Accomplishments
